The Day of the Eve of the Day of the Eve of Christmas

So it's December 23rd, meaning tomorrow will be Christmas Eve with Christmas following that the next day, of course. Usually the holidays are a time for relaxation and hanging out with your family, but so far this has not been the case.

Last night, I was up until 3:30 AM getting Game-Spectrum's 2007 awards list up. I'm happy to announce that it is up (if you didn't see already). Check it out here and feel free to voice your opinion by leaving a comment. The Game of the Year category was argued over considerably. The Orange Box, BioShock and Call of Duty 4 were all contenders for the award, but ultimately The Orange Box won out because of its incredible value.

Yesterday also marked the wrap up of the Three for Free Giveaway. The winner was Scott Curfman, and he'll receive three free games of his choice from www.sprocketidea.com.

Also, Game-Spectrum has posted a guide to turning your videos into a PSP-viewable format, just in time for your holiday travels! Check it out here. Please Digg it as well by clicking here.

Other than what's going on around GS, nothing very interesting is going on in my life at the moment. Whether or not that's a good thing, I don't know. So, to not bore you any further, I'll keep this post short. Anyways, I hope you all have a merry Christmas or just simply a happy holidays, whatever you're into.

    Three for Free

Game-Spectrum has a new contest up, and this time we're giving away three PC games. Here are the details:

Game-Spectrum and www.Sprocketidea.com are teaming up to give away three downloadable games from Sprocket's small, up-and-coming library of games. How do you get into this fantastic offer? Easy, just sign up! You'll need to be a registered user of GS, and all you have to do is fill out a quick form and make sure you put an email address that we can reach you at easily. There will only be one winner, and he or she can choose any three games from the Sprocket library for free, no strings attached!

The contest ends 12/22/07. Sign up before then, and if you're a winner, we'll notify you by 12/23/07. If you don't respond within 24 hours after being notified, we'll give your codes away to the next lucky winner, so act quickly!

    Good luck!

    Hey Again

It's been a long time since my last blog entry. We've been hard at work tweaking the new GS and adding new features. The latest of which (and probably the coolest) is the brand new video section. Check it out by clicking here or just click the  "Videos" link above in the menu.

Also, I got that Samsung LCD display I was talking about a while ago (the 226BW). All I have to say is that it's great. If you're looking for a good monitor, look no further. It has amazing picture, resolution and not to mention it's 22''. I hooked up my old monitor as well, so now I have a dual-monitor setup, which is really nice. I still want to try hooking up my Xbox 360 to the new monitor just for kicks.

I've been playing Mass Effect quite a bit lately (actually on-and-off since I don't have a lot of time to even play) . I'm getting pretty close to beating it. I'm on the last level I think. The game was good, but to be honest, I was expecting a little more.

I downloaded the Halo 3 Heroic Map Pack today and I'm somewhat disappointed. Not only were the maps a little on the expensive side (800 MS Points to be exact), but they were kind of mediocre. Standoff was the only one that really stood out to me. It's a great map. Foundry is okay, but I guess it will only show its true value once people start getting creative with it in the Forge. Rats Nest, on the other hand, pretty much sucks, and it's quickly becoming apparent throughout the Halo 3 community. If you don't feel like shelling out the 800 Points, you can wait until this Spring to download them for free. Bungie also made clear that this is around the time that the next map pack would release.

I'm also planning on upgrading my PC pretty soon. I made a list of my current specs and of the stuff that I plan on upgrading to in the forum. Check it out here. I'm planning on getting the new 8800GTS that NVIDIA just dropped. I might even SLI a couple down the road. I'll also be picking up a quad core to go along with that. Crysis, here I come!

    Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope everyone had an enjoyable Thanksgiving. I know I did, and now I'm stuffed. I can feel the tryptophan kicking in. Anyways, if you didn't hear already, Xbox 360 gamers can now download the Halo MJOLNIR Mix free for Guitar Hero III. Who doesn't want to rock out to their favorite theme song, right?

    New Game-Spectrum Launches

So the GS team has been working tirelessly day and night, and we've finally launched the new Game-Spectrum.com. All users, forum posts, and articles were unfortunately lost in the process, but it was a necessary sacrafice. Here's the official spiel:

Welcome to the new Game-Spectrum.com! We apologize for having to delete all users and posts for the upgrade, but we feel that it will be better in the long haul.

The new Game-Spectrum has many new and exciting features, such as user blogs, article comments, a favorites system (to keep track of your favorite articles or blog postings), an image gallery, a more integrated forum and more! Plus, we have plans to add even more cool new features to the site in the near future! Remember to register your account again, and be sure to report any bugs in the Report Bugs thread in the Suggestions & Feedback forum. Now that the website is actually up, we hope to add tons of content.

We encourage you to take a look around and try out the new features. You can access your very own user blog by clicking on the "Blog Dashboard" link in the User CP in the side bar, and you can also leave comments on other people's blogs!

Thanks for sticking with GS through this transition period. It was tough, but this is a huge step forward for Game-Spectrum and its community. Stay tuned!

Check it out and register at www.game-spectrum.com, and thanks for your support!

In other news, Mass Effect is awesome. Open-mouthed

    New Zune Software/Firmware

Yesterday, the new Zune software and firmware launched alongside the new Zunes themselves. I of course updated my Zune 30GB and installed the new software, and I'm very pleased. The new firmware is great, enabling a nicer navigation system and adding some new features including wireless syncing. I'm even more pleased with the new Zune software, which features a much more sleek design. It also feels a lot less cluttered and more organized, but at the same time, it's a lot less complex. It took a little bit to get adjusted, but now that I'm used to it, there's no way I'd ever go back.

The new Zune.net has made a fantastic change as well. It's now much more community-oriented with forums and the biggest feature, the "Zune Card." It's similar to a Xbox Live Gamercard, but instead of showing games, it shows artists and songs the user has recently listened to.

    Props to Microsoft's Zune team!

In other news, Xbox Live is having its fifth anniversary tomorrow.

    Tournament.com Interview

One of Game-Spectrum's editors had a brief interview with the co-founder of Tournament.com.

"Whenever you visit a site that offers money for playing a game, there's always some sort of catch or scam behind it all.  Playing your favorite game and winning money seems to good to be true.  However, Tournament.com is an exception.  It stands out among the others because it's legit, plain and simple.  It offers a safe and secure environment, along with a great community.  I had the chance to interview Alex Holt, co-founder of Tournament.com , and asked him the top questions the community wanted answered..."

    EA Closes Chicago Studio

EA recently closed its Chicago studio, which had been open for just under a year. It now has to place over 150 employees around the company. An internal memo from EA Games president Frank Gibeau read:

Today we are announcing the closure of our studio in Chicago. This is a difficult decision but we are convinced it's the right thing to do for the future of the Games Label and EA.

Within the EA Games Label, we are committed to running each franchise and facility as a city/state, teams with unique creative identities as well as responsibility for product quality, ship dates and profitability. We recognize that games require large investments and extended development cycles. We're willing to take risks, make long-term investments, and to support teams and individuals between launches. But each team is responsible for staying on a reasonable path to profitability. Sticking to that strategy is what gives us the financial resources and flexibility to take risks on new projects.

Unfortunately, EA Chicago hasn't been able to meet that standard. The location has grown dramatically in the past three years while revenue from the games developed there has not. The number of employees has grown from 49 in 2004 to 146 people currently in the new facility in downtown Chicago. As it stands, EA Chicago has no expectation of hitting our profitability targets until FY2011 or later.

Closing EA Chicago is the toughest decision I've made in my career - one that in no way reflects on the talent and dedication of the people who work there. I've enjoyed their games and consider GM Kudo Tsunoda to be one of the best creative minds in our industry. The people impacted by this decision will be treated fairly - we're offering relocation opportunities to many and there will be outplacement assistance and severance for all eligible employees.

I know this decision will be unsettling to many beyond those who work in Chicago. It's important that you understand that we are willing to take creative risks and make long-term investments in people and projects. But the city/state philosophy demands that every project be committed to delivering a reasonable expectation of profitability. It's a performance commitment that binds us together and ensures we have the resources we need to invest back into our people and creative output.

Finally, when EA announced our quarterly earnings last week, John and Warren referenced facility closures. We had planned to include Chicago in that communication but a personal tragedy in the studio - the death of a colleague - resulted in our delaying the announcement out of respect for his family and friends. I apologize for any confusion or concern that caused.

I think you'll find that in addition to tackling some serious challenges, we are making great progress on our business. Consumers have responded well to our new IP and quality scores are tracking up. We are proud of our recent hits, such as Skate and the success we have made in making a solid game with The Simpsons. And we're looking forward to breakout hits like Need For Speed Pro Street, Rockband, Burnout Paradise, Battlefield Bad Company, Army of Two, Crysis, and more in the future with Mass Effect and Mercenaries 2 World in Flames.

We're definitely headed in the right direction.

    Frank

Manhunt 2 Gets Pulled From Target Shelves

There were rumors about that Target would be pulling Manhunt 2 from its shelves across the country. Official word has been released from the company today:
"Target strives to provide merchandise that will appeal to a wide variety of guests. We also want guests to be comfortable with the purchasing decisions they make at Target. All video games and computer software sold at Target currently carry ratings by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB)--from early childhood through mature audiences. While Manhunt 2 was given a Mature rating by the ERSB, we received additional information that players can potentially view previously filtered content by altering the game code. As a result, we have decided not to carry the game."
The game is infact nowhere to be found on the store's website or in the store itself. It seems like this is turning into a "hot coffee" scenario, but really it shouldn't be. The game's code must be altered in order to access the hyper-violent content. It would be all right if the company simply decided the game alone was too violent to retail, but that's not the case. Instead, the consumer has to illegally modify the game's contents, so is this much different from buying some OTC medicines and creating illegal drugs?

Just doesn't seem quite right to me.

Guitar Hero III Makes $115 Million in First Week

I have to hand it to Neversoft, they really came out with a quality product. Guitar Hero II was a fantastic game, but it's safe to say GHIII takes the franchise one step leap further. The track list is great, and the multiplayer additions truly revitalize the series. That's why it doesn't come as a surprise to see that Guitar Hero III made over $115 million in its first week of being released, making it Activision's best launch in the company's history.

Unfortunately, there is some bad news for publisher Activision. During its quarterly earnings call, company CEO Robert Kotick said "there's a probability that this holiday, we won't be able to supply all the demand for every platform." Actually, this is more so a problem for gamers looking to get their hands on the game than it is for Activision, which is rolling in the money.

Regardless, I look forward to seeing how EA's Rock Band fares against Guitar Hero III, which has already proven itself worthy.

    I'm Back!

I can't believe I haven't made a blog entry since February! It looks like I haven't caught on to the whole blogging thing. Anyways, I just wanted to make this post incase anyone who actually does happen to stumble upon my blog knows I am indeed alive.

The main reason I never post here is because of how busy I am. Over the summer I took a trip to Italy (which was really fun), and aside from that, I just haven't had time to post anything. I may try to post a bit more frequently (y'know, more than once per 8 months Wink), but no guarantees. One thing that may prevent me from doing so is the insane amount of games coming out this fall/winter. Halo 3 consumed me in September and most of October, and more recently, Guitar Hero III and The Orange Box. Now, I have Rock Band, Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty 4, Mass Effect, and a whole bunch of others to look forward to, and that's just on the Xbox 360. This is getting out of hand. Confused

A lot has happened since my last post here. Of most significance (besides my trip to Europe) is perhaps me taking a staff position at the new Xbox gaming site XboxFocus. It's still largely under construction, but you can check it out at www.XboxFocus.com. This doesn't mean I'm leaving my current position as editor-in-chief at Game-Spectrum, it just means I get to do more work. Wait...is that a good thing?

    Ex-Box: Death of Microsoft's Xbox

A really good editorial by Evan, our Managing Editor, about the end of the Xbox's glorious life.

I think it's safe to say that the Xbox has officially passed away (it's no longer being manufactured). It had a decent run, and gave Sony's PlayStation 2 a run for its money. However, instead of letting it fade away into the grave of lost consoles, let's look back at the good times... (read more)

    Super Bowl XLI

So the Super Bowl starts in a couple of hours. I'll be watching the game, but I don't really care whether the Colts or the Bears win, although my money's on the Colts. I'm hoping the commercials will be good this year since it seems a majority of the people watching the game watch it for the commercials. The halftime performance is being done by Prince, and I'm not exactly a Prince fan. I don't usually watch the halftime performance anyways, and this will be no exception.

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes and Untold Legends Dark Kingdom

Sony Online Entertainment was kind enough to send us their brand new MMORPG for PC, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, developed by Sigil Games and Untold Legends Dark Kingdom for PS3, so I'll have to see how these games are. They also send me a Dark Kingdom T-shirt which looks really cool (as shown in picture below).

Last week we got Metal Slug Anthology for Wii from the good folks over at MMPR.com. We'll have reviews for all of these games pretty soon.

    GRAW 2 Demo!

The Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 single player demo is out today on the Live Marketplace! I just thought I'd let you know if you didn't already. It seems to me this game might be getting rushed a bit. I mean, GRAW came out less than a year ago! I'm just hoping this game turns out good, and they fix the horrible spawn camping problem!

    Windows Vista

So Windows Vista launched today. Who knows how successful it will be initially what with all its high end (at the moment) requirements. I'm still undecided whether I should upgrade or not. My rig I use is an Alienware Aurora 3200 with 1 GB of RAM, a 160 GB HDD (with 300 GB external), and a Radeon X800 PRO GPU. I'm sure I'd be able to run it well, it's just I'm thinking about waiting a while for all the bugs to be squashed and so on. The only thing that has me convinced right now is DX10, which isn't a huge factor. Of course, in due time, Vista will become a standard just like XP is now.

Anyways, if you have no idea what Windows Vista is, or you would like to know more about it, head on over to the Vista article at Game-Spectrum.com.

    Crackdown+Halo 3 Beta

I haven't been updating much here, so I apologize for that (to any of you who actually happen to read this blog).

Anyways, the Crackdown demo is coming out tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it, but I'm sure it will take FOREVER to download since everyone and their grandma is going to be downloading it. I don't have the game reserved, but I'll probably still try picking it up on launch (this will probably end up being impossible since people are buying it more or less for the Halo 3 beta invitation).

Speaking of H3 beta, apparantely Bungie/Microsoft is sending out the invitations in the mail these next few weeks (fingers crossed).

    iPhone?

What do you think of Apple's iPhone? Now, don't get me wrong, I like a lot of Apple products, but this one just seems to bug me. Mainly due to its marketing I guess. Here are my opinions:

    1. It's $600 with a 2 year contract. This is ridiculous. It holds 8 GB. You might as well buy an iPod (or Zune) for way less and get a crappy phone.

    2. It's only Cingular (at least for 6 months I think).

    3. What's so special about it? Plenty of devices have touch screen, web browsers, music, etc. They claim it's going to "revolutionize phones?" Yeah, just like the Segway (It) was going to change the way cities were built? (Anyone remember that?) Take a look at this: http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/11/iphone-and-lg-ke850-separated-at-birth. Look similar? Could be lawsuit number 2 (Apple's already being sued by Cisco Systems which already owns the iPhone name).

Apple is all marketing. We'll see how this one comes out.
